SUMMARY:Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Kentucky Historical Society approved a Historical Marker to be placed outside Eastern Cemetery on Baxter Avenue. Dr. Andrew Patrick\, Councilman S. Brandon Coan\, and Andy Harpole will speak at the dedication ceremony. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter of the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Please join us for the ceremony and light refreshments afterward at the Loomis Wake House in Eastern Cemetery. We will also give a couple of tours after the ceremony.

SUMMARY:Mayor's Give a Day Week of Service
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Mayor’s Give A Day Week of Service\, we invite you to help us clean up Eastern Cemetery on Sunday\, April 15\, 2017 from 10am to 4pm. You can set your own hours within this time frame if you would like to join us. \nEastern Cemetery located at 641 Baxter Avenue has been a part of the Louisville Community since 1854. The cemetery was abandoned in the 1980s when proof of widespread grave abuse was discovered. For more than two decades\, Eastern sat untouched and uncared for. Headstones crumbled as the grounds became overgrown and were used for illegal dumping and vandalism. \nIn 2013 our volunteer group\, Friends of Eastern Cemetery\, armed with trash bags and a single mower\, began picking up the grounds\, doing our best to clean up over two decades of neglect and are still striving to create a self-sustainable model for continued upkeep of this historic cemetery. \nOn Sunday\, April 15th\, we would love for you to join us for an exciting volunteer day at Eastern Cemetery. You will spend the day learning about the rich history of Eastern Cemetery and its residents; working in a serene\, beautiful environment; mowing grass; weed eating; and cleaning veteran headstones. We might even have the opportunity to reset some of the veteran headstones that have been reclaimed by the earth over time. We recommend that you bring gloves and wear sturdy\, closed toed shoes. We will provide all other supplies.

DESCRIPTION:The next Volunteer Day will be Sunday\, April 29th from 11am until 2pm\, early birds are welcome! Please make it if you can\, at whatever time you can. It would be great if people could bring lawn mowers\, weed eaters (especially weed eaters!!)\, rakes\, chainsaws\, limb nippers\, or any yard tools. If you don’t have any that’s ok\, we still have plenty for everybody of all skills and capabilities to do! Once you arrive at the cemetery\, look for our volunteer table where there will be a sign in sheet and people to guide you to the ares we are focusing on as well as drinks and snacks. \nTHANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!! Its our volunteers that make the difference so please grab everyone you know and head out to Eastern Cemetery this Sunday! \nPLEASE SHARE this event! \nIf you would like to help\, but aren’t necessarily into doing manual labor\, please contact us or come to the volunteer day. We are looking for people to help with event coordination and arts & crafts. If you would like to help\, we have a place for you!!!
